Room Design Project:

Yucky Blucky Fruitcake: Doechii

This was a paper project assigned as a final project for my Scenic Design course. The goal was to build an 8’ by 10’ bedroom in 1/2 inch scale using the detail provided by a short story, poem, song, or other snippet of text.

I chose the song: Yucky Blucky Fruitcake by Doechii, a Junie B. Jones reference

Character Analysis:

I started by pulling things from the text, building a personality for the owner of our room. As well as finding things that are mentioned (in some capacity) in the song that be noted in the set dressing

Mood Board:

Following that I developed a mood board, getting most of my “feels like” imagery from the music video. I was going for a busy feel to the room, a collection of all the old things from over the years. It’s her childhood bedroom after all.

Location Scouting:

Doechii is from Tampa Florida, so I Zillowed around where she went to school. I liked the middle photo of the yellow house, and had her room be that extension off to the right. I based the interior layout largely off of the middle left photo and bottom right.

Building the Room:

Step one in the building process was the room itself. I wish that I had a photo later in the process, but the goal was to have open studs in the wall and the ceiling, which provide awesome lighting texture. So while the walls and siding were standard flat patterns, the studs would have patterns from Junie B. Jones books and multicolored insulation.

Furniture Research:

This was really just a collection of references for the set dressing, but I also took a bit of reference from my house as well.

The Results:

The room features a number of things.

Starting with her bookshelf which has a number of books and CDs along with a CD player, trophies from dance competitions, a baseball because why were the boys the only ones allowed to play hardball, and a Paramore album that she got not clocking that she in fact did not have a record player.

Above her bed she has a TV with a DvD player, three stuffed animals, two pillows, and knee high Chuck Taylors beside it.

On her end table sits a polka dotted lamp, her phone, and a collection of manga and fashion magazines.

Her walls are decorated with music posters from artists she finds inspiration from, and on her ceiling is a fan.

This was all done using Illustration Board, Bristol Board, acrylic paints, Printer paper, Kleenex for the fabrics and round objects (mixed it with glue to form a kind of clay,) and pom poms for the insulation.

If I were to make improvements first thing I would do is add more clutter, piles of clothes and things hanging from the ceiling, more stuffed animals in particular an albino alligator, I also had an open diary that I forgot to glue down and ended up losing it.
